Sometimes, life feels like a trusty lawn mower—steadily pushing through the thick grass of daily responsibilities, ambitions, and challenges. We start each day with determination and grit, much like starting a well-oiled machine. Yet, without realising it, our blades—the sharpness of our energy, focus, and motivation—can become dull over time.
This is exactly what I realised recently, and it struck me how important it is to pause and take stock of our personal well-being.
Recognising When It’s Time for a Tune-Up
A few weeks ago, I took my three-year-old lawn mower down to Ballina for servicing. Living on five acres, it’s seen its fair share of work. While it was still functional, it was no longer performing at its best. The grass wasn’t cut cleanly, and each job felt more demanding.
The mechanic’s assessment was a wake-up call:
“There was no oil, the blades were worn out, and the spark plugs were shot.”
A quick fix was not going to cut it. The mower needed new blades, a fresh filter, and a proper tune-up. Once serviced, it was like a brand-new machine—cutting effortlessly, making the lawn look pristine. The difference was night and day.
It made me think, why did I wait so long? And then I realised—don’t we all do this?
When Life’s Blades Feel Dull
Many of us are guilty of ignoring our own “maintenance.” We focus so hard on ticking off to-do lists and pushing through challenges that we neglect ourselves.
Signs of needing a tune-up often creep up gradually:
- Taking longer to “get going” each morning
- Struggling to stay focused or energised
- Feeling like life is harder than it used to be
These are the equivalent of blunt blades and low oil levels. The solution isn’t to keep pushing harder—it’s to stop, reflect, and recalibrate.
How to Sharpen Your Blades and Reignite Your Spark
Just like a lawn mower needs care, so do you. Maintaining energy and confidence is essential for easily cutting through life’s challenges.
- Take Stock: Identify areas in your life where you feel stuck or drained.
- Prioritise Self-Care: Regular breaks, healthy habits, and mindfulness can work wonders.
