The opportunity to make a fresh start is something that we all value, especially if we have been struggling with problems which have weighed us down. The tradition of making New Year’s resolutions illustrates this deep desire to put the past behind us and move on.
Many books have been written about goal setting and changing habits and there is an abundance of information on the internet. Just YouTube “how to set a goal or how to get rid of old habits and start new ones”. Watch some “TED” talks and get some insights that will successfully help get what you want.
Here are two questions to ask before you set your goals to change your old habits.
1. When is the best time for me to set a goal?
Seems simple enough, but when you think about it, timing is everything. Many people, for example, will decide to set a goal to lose weight after stepping on the scales the morning after a big night of celebrating, not considering the parties that are still on the calendar to go to over in the next few weeks.
January’s New Year’s Resolutions often fail because of this simple fact of poor timing. Other examples of this are setting a goal to stop smoking, start a gym membership or give up alcohol, but again the timing is out, and the new goal is broken within a short time.
Make sure when you set a goal to change your habits that you give yourself the best chance by considering if it’s the right or wrong time.
2. How do I know that this is the best time to set my goal?
By answering this question honestly and writing down your answers, you effectively confirm one way or the other if the timing is right and you are ready to commit to your goal.
Enjoy moving forward in 2023 when the time is right!
